A common misconception among non-native speakers is that GMAT and GRE assess English proficiency like IELTS or TOEFL. In reality, these exams evaluate a candidate’s data analysis, reasoning, and problem-solving abilities. These questions are deliberately designed to make it even challenging for native English speakers. The additional burden of overcoming language barriers makes it even more daunting for non-native speakers. Here are a few things to consider to ensure successful GMAT/GRE preparation as a non-native speaker.
Assess your readiness
It’s essential to assess your readiness to start preparing for the exam. Your TOEFL or IELTS score is a good benchmark for your readiness for the verbal section. Business schools usually require around 100 TOEFL score or 7 IELTS score. If you don’t meet this requirement, you most likely don’t have the English fundamentals to start learning the verbal portion of GMAT or GRE.
For the quantitative portion, there’s no standardized test that we can use. However, if you took science (IPA in Indonesian schools) concentration in high schools, graduated with an engineering degree, or worked in a quantitative-heavy sector, you most likely have the foundation to start preparing for GMAT/GRE’s quantitative section.
Learn to approach the problems systematically
Success on the GMAT/GRE requires systematic and analytical thinking. You need to be familiar with the different types of problems. More importantly, you have to dissect each question, identify key components, and solve them methodically. By focusing on the underlying concepts rather than getting bogged down by the wording, you can improve your performance on the exam and minimize distraction from vocabulary or grammatical gaps.
Give yourself time to master GMAT/GRE
Most importantly, it takes time to master GMAT/GRE; there’s no shortcut. We recommend dedicating at least a year to prepare thoroughly for the exam, allowing yourself sufficient time to build skills and confidence. Given the additional challenge of enhancing English proficiency, this is even more crucial for non-native speakers.
Preparing for the GMAT/GRE as a non-native speaker takes time and a lot of energy, but with the right approach and guidance, success is attainable. Assess your readiness and start planning your GMAT/GRE preparation with Toga MBA Consulting.
